In the autumn of 2020, Armenia and Azerbaijan fought a month-long war for control of Nagorno-Karabakh, a de facto state in the South Caucasus that is internationally recognised as part of Azerbaijan and which has been the source of regional conflict since the late 1980s. In his talk, Neil Hauer will reflect on the war and its reverberations so far, for everything from the balance of power between the external powers, Russia and Turkey, to the prospects of Armenian Prime Minister Nikol Pashinyan, who was re-elected in June 2021 amid protests and coup claims.
Neil Hauer is a Yerevan-based journalist covering the Caucasus for the news website bne IntelliNews. He has also been published in the Guardian, the Telegraph, and Foreign Affairs. Hauer holds a B.A. in political science from the University of Alberta and an M.A. in Russian and Eurasian studies from Carleton University, where he wrote a thesis on the Nagorno-Karabakh conflict.
