Russia and Iran: A strategic partnership? - Nikolay Kozhanov

Over recent decades, Russia and Iran have partnered up, putting aside mutual distrust, Russian reservations about Iran’s nuclear ambitions, and conflicting regional interests to cooperate on a number of issues including, most notoriously, Russia’s invasion of Ukraine.

Over recent decades, Russia and Iran have partnered up, putting aside mutual distrust, Russian reservations about Iran’s nuclear ambitions, and conflicting regional interests to cooperate on a number of issues including, most notoriously, Russia’s invasion of Ukraine. Amid renewed interest in the Russo-Iranian relationship in connection with the war in Ukraine and the renegotiation of the Iran nuclear deal, Nikolay Kozhanov explores how this key partnership has developed.

Nikolay Kozhanov is a research associate professor at the Gulf Studies Center of Qatar University. He holds a PhD in International Economics and Economic Security from Saint Petersburg State University. In addition to his academic work, which focuses on the geoeconomics of Gulf hydrocarbons and Russian policy in the Middle East, he has been a visiting fellow at several leading international foreign policy think tanks including Chatham House and the Washington Institute for Near East Policy.
