We are deeply honoured that Sergei Guriev, the celebrated economist and Dean of London Business School, has agreed to deliver this year’s Daniel Salbstein Memorial Lecture. This is the fifth in this series of Memorial Lectures dedicated to the memory of our founder and former Chairman and Talks Organiser, Daniel Salbstein OBE (1937-2020), in recognition of his unique role in the creation and development of the Society.
The title of Sergei Guriev’s talk is The Global Economic Landscape and the Political Economy of Putin’s War. In the new era of uncertainty we have entered, the inter-connectedness of economic and political factors is more striking than ever, not least the crucial importance of a strong economy to a country’s military capability, which in turn is essential to its national security. In this talk, Professor Guriev will discuss the global economic landscape and the impact of tectonic shifts in the world economy and geopolitics on the Russian economy and society and Putin’s capacity to continue his war of aggression against Ukraine.
Sergei Guriev is one of the most celebrated Russian economists of his generation and a highly-respected commentator both on economic issues globally and on current events in Russia. Since August 2024 he has been Dean of the London Business School, where he is also a Professor of Economics. Before that he served at Sciences Po in Paris (Instituts d’Etudes Politiques) as Provost from 2022 to 2024 and as Professor of Economics from 2013 to 2024. He served as Chief Economist of the European Bank for Reconstruction and Development in London from 2016 to 2019. From 2004 to 2013 he was Morgan Stanley Professor of Economics and a Rector at the New Economic School in Moscow. He is a member of the Group of Thirty, a Global Member of the Trilateral Commission. He is also a Research Fellow at the Centre for Economic Policy Research, London, a Senior Member of the Institut Universitaire de France, an Ordinary Member of Academia Europeae, and an Honorary Foreign Member of the American Economic Association.
He is a co-author (with Daniel Treisman) of the prize-winning book “Spin Dictators: The Changing Face of Tyranny in the 21st Century,” Princeton University Press: 2022, translated into 13 languages.
