In her illustrated talk, which will be in Russian, Professor Lilit Meliksetyan will give us an overview of Armenian painting in the 19th and early 20th centuries and will tell us about the work of some of the most significant Armenian painters during this period such as the post-impressionists Martiros Saryan and Minas Avetisyan, to name but two. Martiros Saryan (1880-1972) was the founder of the modern Armenian National School of Painting. He was one of the members of the art association ‘The Four Arts’, which existed in Moscow and Leningrad between 1924 and 1931. Minas Avetisian (1928-1975) painted and illustrated in a revolutionary style for his time and had a profound impact on Armenian painting. Professor Meliksetyan will highlight the links Armenian artists had with well-known Russian impressionist painters such as Valentin Serov (1865-1911) and Konstantin Korovin (1861-1937). And she will also say a few words about ancient Armenian art.
